Here we go again: leaving number 2

 

Leaving take two!  We each took a turn reading the directions again, and voila!  We simply had the brakes adjusted incorrectly and, once fixed, set out again the very same night!  (As soon as we could convince the kitty to get in the truck, that is.)

                           

Max about to execute a serious face palm as he realizes we have the wrong settings in the electric controller.  Derp!



Slightly lest robust cheering, but cheering none the same!


I promise we are keeping the kitty safe as we putter along but he was having none of the carrier and we decided to let him get comfortable with the whole idea of life on the road on his terms.


Morning 1: Will you look at those happy campers! Found a very quiet rest area in Western NC to catch a few hours rest and begin the amazing journey ahead!

This is not the actual photo from when we went through the scales again, but it is certainly the most adorable way to introduce the next confession.  Despite the fact that we did weigh the truck and trailer + as you as my witness, we weighed the tongue, too, we somehow ended up hundreds of miles from home quite shamefully overweight.  In my insistence that we not interact with anyone on our trip cross country, we may have gone a bit overboard on provisions.  Crap.  We held a downcast family meeting and unanimously voted to drive back home and unload a few hundred pounds of stuff. Try number 2: aborted.


Drinking tea as we retrace hundreds of miles back to the origin of the trip.

      Thank heavens we didn't know all the other issues that would befall us lol. But seriously, we always try to live by 'if you're going to do something, do it right' and traveling that way was clearly the way we really wanted, but not the right way to do it. (And yes, I could start a whole blog dedicated to the photos I've taken of Toby so far. He is irresistible!)

      Thanks for the kind wishes, Cullen! It's really been a fun trip, despite the bumps. I think our family just kinda expects that to be part of the journey - as one friend pointed out - I didn't name this crooked and steep because I thought it would be smooth sailing!

Buonasera Venezia

 When we honeymooned in Venice, we'd go into the historic zone before dawn and watch the city come awake as the sun rose. We'd ride empty vaporettos around and (pre-cell phone + google maps) just wander getting kinda lost. This time we stayed on the mainland and had a very jetlagged teen - not to mention an incredible breakfast spread at the hotel that was so worth hanging around for - so we had to aim to explore the city at night in hopes of a reprieve from the heat and crowds. It was still sweltering. It was still a riot of people - water buses even more full than in the day! But it was magical, festive, and mysterious in a whole new way. Though the Rialto Bridge was rebuilt in the late 1500s, it is the oldest crossing of the Grand Canal, originally constructed in 1181.   While my sweet guy is a pacifist and gentle soul, he admittedly loves WWI reenacting. He is fascinated by so many varied aspects, from learning songs of the time - in different languages, to cooking recipes from the early 1900s, to studying the technological and medical breakthroughs of the war years; he has a passion for immersing himself in another time.
