crooked and steep

The story all starts here.  With this sweet little pup who showed up at our property, decided she liked it very much, and resolved to stay and live with us, thank you very much.  We were as surprised as you to suddenly find ourselves adopted when we weren't even looking to be.  But this girl stole our hearts pretty quickly and we're finding we have to remain open to what the universe sends our way. She did come with a name, Blanca.  I'd really like to change it, but she responds to it and as we are trying to teach her commands, I don't want to confuse her.  She is very intelligent and also so quiet + timid + sweet.  So when she suddenly started growling, barking, + snapping a few days ago, I was incredibly startled and wondered if this pup actually maybe has aggression issues.   But then I looked where she was barking and at my feet was a large, coiled rattlesnake.   I am very aware that I am a guest in this desert and believe ...

7 years ago we drove cross country and down to Elias Calles in a tiny trailer, with a tiny version of LZ, and these memories just came up + made me smile + I thought you might like to see them, too. I remember we found two other animal skulls besides this cow one, which clearly we should have kept since I now see them painted online for $400.   This was at a military checkpoint in San Ignacio.  I remember LZ was so curious about the soldiers and their encampment. Here is that same guy, just so much older.  I measure time in how much taller and squeakier my son gets.  I love the voice changing thing.  Peter Brady had nothing on what my guy's vocal cords are going through. And just like last time we were here (or on any adventure, really) we are exploring the ice cream situation.
